EV Charger Frequently Asked Questions

EV Charger FAQs

There can be a lot of confusion surrounding EV Chargers, especially since they are new to most of us and the technology is changing so rapidly. We put together a list of answers to questions many people ask. Whether it is cost or types of plugs, we’ve got answers for you. If you don’t find what you are looking for, feel free to ask us a question, and we’ll get back to you within one business day!
Are EV Chargers Universal?
Mostly, yes. EV chargers are all made to be universal. They work with any electric vehicle (EV) if the charger and vehicle both have the same plug.
Are All EV Charger Plugs The Same?

No. There are two standardized plugs that work with nearly every electric car in the United States. Additionally, there is the proprietary Tesla Supercharger plug that only works with Teslas.

J1772 PLUGS

The J1772 plug, also known as the SAE J1772 or EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), is a standard connection for charging electric vehicles manufactured in the United States and Canada. The plug is a little more than two inches in diameter, and it has five prongs, three of which have pins: two on top and one on the bottom. It has a locking mechanism to fixtures to ensure the plug stays connected while it charges.

CCS1 PLUGS

CCS1 stands for combined charging system combination 1. This is a standardized EV charging plug that uses AC and DC energy to charge vehicles more quickly. It is used widely throughout the United States and some international locations. It is based off the J1772 plug with two power contact holes below for DC power positive and negative connections.

Are EV Chargers Waterproof?

The simple answer is Yes. However, there are a few things you should know.

First, rain should not pose a danger to you while you charge your EV. Designers and manufacturers take safety very seriously, so you can rest easy.

Second, it’s important to understand that, just like any other electrical device, all-weather EV chargers are susceptible to damage from the elements. The weather can also cause problems with communication between the charger and your car. If you live in a particularly extreme climate (think desert heat or frigid cold), make sure you get a charger that can handle it.

Third, it’s best not to use a charger that is partially submerged. Although EV chargers that are properly installed should not pose a threat while it is raining, voltage chargers that are regularly semi-submerged due to extreme flooding or bad drainage may eventually become unsafe. For that reason, it is best to install EV charging stations in a well-drained location.

Level 1 EV chargers are rated for outdoor use, with some caveats. These chargers are typically not water–or weather–proof, and they don’t have any heating element that would prevent their performance from slowing down in cold weather. You’ll want to make sure to cover your charger when it’s not in use, and the area where you plan to install it should be protected from the elements (such as under a carport).

Level 2 and 3 EV chargers can get wet, as most commercial EV chargers are designed to be fairly waterproof. Water damage, however, may void your warranty, depending on the manufacturer.

Are Monetized EV Chargers Profitable?

Yes, monetized electric car chargers are profitable. Due to the low supply and high need for charging electric cars, there is a growing demand for monetized chargers.

There are two main ways to monetize a charger.

First: Fees for charging time.

Monetized EV charging stations are owned by private entities who have agreed to allow the general public to use them for a fee. Typically, the owner will set the price for an hour of use or per kilowatt-hour (energy consumed). Then they will pay the electric bill for that charger and the difference is the profit generated.

Monetized chargers are an increasingly popular way to add value to parking garages, or street parking near busy venues. The most popular locations for monetized EV chargers are employee parking, grocery stores and shopping centers, public street parking, event centers and sporting arenas, and apartment complexes and hotels.

Second: Fees for ad space.

Most monetized chargers are in semi-public locations, either along streets, in parking lots, next to sidewalks, etc. This makes selling a branded charger wraps or digital ads on the screens quite profitable. Depending on the brand and location of charger, it can be very easy to connect a charger to an ad network that will automatically run ads on the screen and pay a commission.

What Types Of EV Chargers Are There?

There are various EV chargers, each with different speeds, measured in kilowatts (kW). The most common chargers are Level 1, Level 2, and DC Fast Chargers.

Level 1 chargers are the basic ones you plug into a typical wall outlet. They charge your car through a 120-volt electrical system. If you have access to one of these, it’s a good idea to use it regularly to keep your battery charged at home. You might also find these in public places like hotels or parking lots. Using one of these, it will take about 8-10 hours to charge your car fully.

Level 2 chargers are also common in public places, but they’re capable of charging cars much faster than the Level 1 chargers because they charge through a 240-volt system. Most charging stations will offer Level 1 and Level 2, but if you’re using a Level 2 charger, your electric vehicle should be fully charged in 3-8 hours.

Level 3 DC Fast Chargers are rarer than the other two types of chargers, and they can typically only be found at dedicated fast charging stations. They can recharge your car in under an hour by using a 480-volt system that delivers direct current directly to the battery cells.

The charging rate of your vehicle will depend on the kind of plug you have available at the location of installation. Different EVs come with additional charging capabilities, so make sure to check what your car can handle before plugging in.

Can DC Fast Chargers Be Installed In A Home?
Most of the time you cannot install fast chargers in a home, since it is incredibly uncommon to allow a residential home to receive a 480-volt connection. Additionally, DC fast chargers are can be 20x more expensive than level 1 or level 2 chargers and take up a lot more space.
Who Can Install An EV Charger?
Most home owners can install a Level 1 home charger by following the instructions that come with the device. However, it is highly recommended that for Level 2 and 3 EV charging station installations home and business owners hire a licensed electrician. Yes. The charging station itself may be eligible for the 30% federal tax credit if you install it at your home (the one you live in—not a second or vacation home). You can also take advantage of some great state incentives for installing commercial electric vehicle chargers when you select Amteck. We keep track of the incentives your business can use and how to maximize them, so you can save as much as possible on your charger installation. With all the tax incentives that exist, it may be possible to save as much as 75%.
How Much Does An EV Charger Cost?
This question is one of the most common questions we get. It is difficult to answer, but we’ll do our best. A level 1 home charger can be purchased online, from an auto parts store, or home improvement store for less than $200. These can be easily attached to your garage wall, plugged into a normal outlet, and deliver a slow charge to your electric car. (Pro Tip: Ensure no other appliance is one the same breaker as the plug you use for your charger, it will likely trip.) A level 2 charger can also be purchased from most EV charger manufacturers online, and some brands are carried in big box home improvement stores for around $300-900, depending on the brand. Commercial grade level 2 chargers can run as much as $9,000 due to weather proofing, monetization, and software. However, these usually require professional installation (even in residential locations), and that can run from $200-2,500 at a home, to $400-$5,000 in a commercial location depending on if the device is installed inside or outside, and if the location has an existing 240v connection or not. For an accurate cost estimate, click the button below to receive a quote. A Level 3 DC fast charger is where prices become very difficult to specify. There are a lot of variables to take into account, such as brand, customization, location, and availability of a 480v connection. Get a Quote
Why Are EV Chargers So Expensive?
Electric car chargers are expensive because they have to be made of special materials, technology, and use new distribution systems. Gas pumps have been around for a century and have not changed much. They only require a few supplies, and the scale of manufacturing and distribution is so large that it keeps gas pumps cheap.
