Preventive Maintenance

NFPA 70B is Now a Mandatory Standard

Until 2023, NFPA 70B provided guidelines for safe electrical practice, encompassing everything from the maintenance of electrical systems and equipment to electronic and communication systems. However, the latest update has elevated NFPA 70B from a “recommended practice” to an “enforced/required practice”. This means your electrical maintenance is no longer just a suggestion; it is a must.

4 Key Steps to Preventive Maintenance Plans

1. Audit and Plan Your Needs

  • Create a list of all electrical systems, machinery, and building infrastructure. Consider the
history and develop an understanding of the needed inspections and maintenance.
  • Verify you have all necessary wiring diagrams, schematics, and manuals needed for your facility’s
    electrical systems.
  • Appoint an EPM supervisor to oversee your facility’s program.
  • Knowing what you have and what you need saves time and money. It also ensures everyone has the same expectations regarding scope of work.

2. Maintain

Maintaining electrical equipment is necessary and now required. Amteck is your qualified contractor to perform all of the required functions including:

  • Inspecting – Visual and audible inspections tell a lot about the condition of equipment.
  • Testing – Wires and cables, grounding, breakers, transformer oil, fuses, relays.
  • Scanning – IR scans provide an in-depth look at the operating temperatures of equipment.
  • Cleaning – Vacuuming, wiping down, and removing corrosion improve the
    condition of equipment.
  • Tightening – Connections to wires, bussing, and anchoring are critical in
    ensuring safe operation.
  • Servicing – Operate breakers and other devices, verify connecting
    hardware, lubricate components.

3. Record and Evaluate

EPMs require data records of all maintenance and tests. Amteck provides
complete reporting on the entire service program. Amteck will evaluate all tests,
update results carefully, and determine if any existing problems need immediate
attention. We recommend sharing these results and your full EPM program with your insurance provider to verify that you are covered in case of an electrical incident. Not maintaining your facility and your equipment can negatively affect your production, but it could also void warranties, and even nullify insurance coverage.

4. Frequency

When you work with Amteck for your EPM plan, we build the maintenance schedule around your needs, taking into account the facility, staff, NFPA guidance, insurance recommendations, and more. Depending on conditions, you may consider additional tests or a more frequent testing schedule. In those situations, we’re ready and able to help.
